The Opioid Epidemic: How Chiropractic Care is Changing the Equation
Updated: Mar 30, 2021
The #1 cause of disability in the United States if low back pain. The #2 cause is headaches. Both of these conditions, when handled through traditional medical routes, typically result in some sort of injection, powerful medications, and/or surgery. Yesterday, 130 people died from opioids. That is according to the Center for Disease Control who estimates over 47,000 people die annually in the US from opioid-related causes. That number is horrific and sad and should cause every healthcare provider, parent, coach, and spouse to pay attention and read on.
A recent study published in the Journal of American Medical Association found that NSAIDs (over-the-counter painkillers) were more effective than opioid drugs in managing pain in people with consistent, chronic low back pain with much fewer and less serious side-effects. So why are providers still prescribing opioids at such high rates?
One likely reason is because providers are out of options and their patients are still in excruciating pain. These people have usually had several rounds of injections, multiple surgeries, and increasing doses of medications. It’s a tough situation. Here is my opinion (and I’ll expand more below) … every single person suffering from low back pain and headaches should be seeing a chiropractor as part of their primary care team because it is safe, effective, and cheap as compared to most other options.
The research on chiropractic and low back pain have shown time-and-time again that chiropractic care is one of the most effective (if not THE most effective) treatment for low back pain. Not only that, but people who seek chiropractic care first for low back pain are over 90% less likely to require surgery. If you or someone you know is suffering from low back pain, they should be seeing a chiropractor.
Headaches and migraines are the #2 cause of disability in the United States. In our clinic, it is one of the most popular reasons why people first come-in to our clinic. We have helped hundreds of people in this community with their headaches and migraines! In most cases, we are able to significantly decrease or completely eliminate the amount of medications they are taking.
From kids to older adults, chiropractic care is safe, effective, and efficient for helping people suffering from low back pain and headaches. Not only that, chiropractic care addresses the underlying cause of the problem, not just masking the pain.
