Fall Yard Work Is Here, So Is Back Pain: Keeping Your Back Strong Through Raking, Hauling, and Cleanup. By Dr. Nate Servey, D.C. | Power of Life Chiropractic and Holistic Health
You've been at it for two hours. The leaves looked manageable when you started, but now there's another pile, another tarp to drag to the curb, and a garden bed still waiting to be cleaned out. You straighten up, and your lower back lets you know exactly how it feels about that.
If that sounds familiar, you're in good company. Every fall in Minnesota, the same story shows up at Power of Life Chiropractic and Holistic Health in Victoria, MN: a full weekend of yard work, followed by a Monday morning of "what did I do to my back?"

The Toll Fall Cleanup Takes
Yard work doesn't feel like a workout, but your body treats it like one. Here's what we hear most often:
Raking means hours of repetitive twisting and reaching, usually on the same side.
Hauling bags of leaves and branches puts your low back to work, especially when the bags are overfilled.
Cleaning gutters or hanging lights means reaching overhead, which loads the neck and shoulders.
Bending and kneeling in garden beds tightens the hips and low back.
Cleaning out the garage usually means lots of lifting and awkward positioning.
After a summer of sitting on patios and in cars, your body is suddenly asked to do a lot more than it's used to.
Stiffness the next day is common. But when soreness lingers, keeps coming back, or starts traveling into your hip or leg, that's your body asking for attention. It's a sign that the joints in the spine and pelvis aren't moving the way they should.
A Few Ways to Go Easier on Your Body
Warm up first. Five minutes of walking and gentle stretching before you pick up the rake.
Switch sides. Change which way you rake so one side isn't doing all the work.
Fill bags halfway. A lighter bag you carry twice beats a heavy one you strain to lift once.
Lift with your hips and knees, and keep the load close to your body.
Take breaks. Stand tall, walk around, and break the job into chunks instead of one marathon afternoon.
Use a kneeling pad or low stool in the garden so you're not folding at the waist.
Where Chiropractic Care Fits
At our clinic, we start by understanding your back, body, and overall health: what you've been doing, what's sore, and what your body has been compensating for. Gentle chiropractic adjustments are aimed at restoring motion to restricted joints in the spine and pelvis. We pair that with soft tissue work and a few simple movements you can do at home, so you can get back to your yard, and your life, without dreading the next chore.
And with snow shoveling around the corner, fall is a smart time to get checked before winter puts even more demand on your back.
Does This Sound Like You?
Lower back pain or stiffness that hangs on after a weekend of yard work
Tightness in your neck or shoulders after reaching overhead
Pain that travels into your hip or leg
Hesitating to take on chores you used to handle without a second thought
A pattern of "it'll go away on its own" that isn't going away
If any of this feels familiar, you don't have to just tough it out.
