Sciatica and Low Back Pain: The Chiropractic Approach

Updated: Jan 25, 2021

Sciatic pain and low back pain are very common reasons people decide to see a chiropractor. Sciatica is generally defined as radiating pain into the buttocks and sometimes down the back of the leg stemming from the low back and pelvis. Not all sciatica-like pain is the same and pain can stem from several different sources. Luckily the vast majority of people who choose chiropractic care in our clinic experience significant relief, better mobility, and other functional improvements as a result of improved nerve function. All without the use of drugs injections, or surgery!

Keep reading to learn more about sciatic pain.

What Causes Sciatic pain?

Sciatic pain is usually a result of low back or pelvic dysfunction. This dysfunction results in improper alignment of the low back or pelvis (or both) which can cause nerve irritation resulting in traveling pain down the nerve pathway. This dysfunction is usually a result of prolonged sitting at a desk or in a car, trauma to the area such as a fall or accident, or abnormal systemic stress such as during pregnancy or high-stress at home or work.

How Does Chiropractic Help With Sciatica?

In our clinic we use neurologically-based chiropractic adjustments to realign the joints in the low back and pelvis which help decrease nerve irritation and promote a healthy functioning nervous system. The vast majority of people suffering from sciatica notice improvements after just a few treatments!

Once the joints are better aligned, minimizing stress to the area, maintaining good core strength, and receiving regular chiropractic care will help prevent the pain from returning.
